Hanns Rückert (born September 18, 1901 in Fürstenwalde ; † November 3, 1974 in Tübingen ) was a Protestant church historian .

Hanns Rückert studied theology in Jena and Berlin and after receiving his licentiate doctorate in 1924, he worked at the church history seminar. He was inspector of the Johanneum Berlin Foundation and took over the chair for his deceased teacher Karl Holl . Later he saw himself as trustee of the inheritance of Karl Holl.

In 1925 he became a private lecturer in church history in Berlin, and in 1928 professor and successor to Heinrich Böhmer at the University of Leipzig . In 1931 he was appointed to the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen with the support of Hans Lietzmann . He retired in 1966.

With other faculty colleagues, he applied for admission to the NSDAP on May 1, 1933 and in the same month joined the Faith Movement of German Christians ( DC ), but left it again six months later. In this context he protested against the founder of the "Faith Movement of German Christians", Joachim Hossenfelder , because of the Sportpalast scandal and the Weimar leadership conference of the DC from November 23rd to 24th, 1935.

Because of his standing up for Theophil Wurm , he was removed from office as dean in 1934. He resigned from the Society for Church History in 1937 following requests from Erich Seeberg .

In 1933, in collaboration with Friedrich Karl Schumann, he was co-founder, editor-in-chief and co-editor of the monthly for the German Evangelical Church of German Theology . He supervised the contributions to the Saxon church history (BSKG) with Pastor Franz Blanckmeister . In the Supplementa Calviniana series , he edited Calvin's sermons on the second book of Samuel .

He headed the commission for the publication of Martin Luther's works until 1969. His successor was Gerhard Ebeling . In his first publication he succeeded in constructing the figure and role of Girolamo Seripando based on a wide range of sources . He was a representative of the so-called " Luther Renaissance " and distinguished himself from certain views of Ernst Troeltsch .

In 1960 he was accepted into the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .
