Girolamo Seripando OESA (born May 6, 1493 in Troia , † March 17, 1563 in Trento ) was an Italian theologian , Prior General of the Augustinian Hermits and Archbishop of Salerno .

Life

Seripando was born in Troy and joined the Augustinian monastery of San Giovanni a Carbonara in Naples in 1507 . In 1539 he was elected head of the order. He served as theological counselor in the initial sessions of the Council of Trent , and his contribution was of great value. Seripando emphasized the primacy of Scripture over tradition and the importance of studying biblical languages. In 1554 he was elected Archbishop of Salerno. In 1561 he received the cardinal dignity from Pope Pius IV and became cardinal priest of the titular church of Santa Susanna . The Pope entrusted him with the office of legate at the 3rd session (1562/63) of the Council of Trent. There he mainly directed the work on dogmatic regulations. His opinion that a bishop should live in his diocese led to a conflict with the Pope, who called him back. Seripando died suddenly in Trento. He left behind many works, including commentaries on the letters of Paul and the Council of Trent.
