Criticism of accident prevention

Mählmann made a name for himself in particular with his criticism after the fatal accident on April 19, 2013 on the Hamburg Outer Alster, where 13-year-old Lorenz died under tragic circumstances during rowing training. As a result, criticism arose as to why the boy had to drown. Mählmann was often quoted on this, denouncing both the elimination of two strategically important places for the DLRG Hamburg on the Outer Alster, and the lack of life jackets for rowers. These are compulsory for sailors, but not so far for rowers. As a result, a campaign was started to educate people about the dangers of water sports in Hamburg, as another swimming accident occurred in the Stadtparksee in Hamburg in August 2013.

Figure in the Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg

During the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the DLRG in 2013, the DLRG district association Knuffingen was founded in the Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg . This is located in the miniature wonderland in the form of miniature figures near Knuffingen , a virtual location on the largest model railway in the world. There the ruling mayor of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Olaf Scholz , DLRG President Klaus Wilkens and the President of DLRG Hamburg, Heiko Mählmann, were given a place as overseer in the Miniatur Wunderland in the form of small figures on a high seat guarding the "beach of Knuffingen" .
