Heiko Michels

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heiko Michels (born June 20, 1977 in Kiel ) is a German theater director . He is also artistically active as an author , musician and performer.

Michels began his directorial career self-taught in the autonomous scene in Kiel. In Berlin , he studied theater studies with Helmar Schramm and Erika Fischer-Lichte and obtained his master's degree. Research focuses on catharsis , carnival and tragedy .

Parallel to his studies, he staged in extraordinary locations in Berlin: Orestie (2002) in the disused Stadtbad Oderberger Straße or Kino der Freiheit (2005) in the flood bunker under the Arena Berlin were productions with over 20 actors that attracted the public and the press.

Together with the philosopher and dramaturge Fabian Larsson he founded the label Limited Blindness and developed theater in extreme perceptual situations. You realize several works in total darkness: such as Sailors' Uprising (2008 Kiel / Hamburg / Berlin) or The Thread Is Broken (Greiz 2015); The work KlimaX (2009) in the Muffathalle in Munich simulates global warming when the theater is actually heated . Scripts are created as a collage of historical texts.

As an author, he writes discursive theater texts for his project Weinkörper and the opaque society : The series Ende der Süchternheit (2013) takes place for over a year on a side theater of the Thalia-Theater Hamburg and in the Heimathafen Neukölln in Berlin. With this work he also receives piece orders from the economy. Michels has been a cultural advisor and author in the international Therme Art Program since 2018 .

With the music performance project scorbüt he can be seen in the Deutsches Theater Berlin , the Volksbühne Berlin , the Gorki-Theater Berlin and in guest performances all over Europe. Michel's interest in the limits of perception is also reflected in his preoccupation with the real limits of the German cultural area . In 2014 he was Artist in Residence in the Polish border town of Szczecin in the Center for Contemporary Art Trafostacja and developed the Bloto Odry - Oderschlamm project . In France (at the FIEF near Avignon ) he worked on behalf of the DFJW as an acting lecturer on the difference between contemporary German and French acting styles.

criticism

Michels' works are anti-psychological. There are no figures that you can empathize with , but rather it is staged consciously with effect and affect . This form of work is criticized as showmanship , also in connection with the directorial theater debate.

The Berliner Tagesspiegel is debating whether its staging of “it is fermenting” with a wine bar in the Berlin district of Neukölln should not be understood as a “lifestyle stupid” under the sign of gentrification . Michels responds to this criticism with the short production of it bleeds ( Heimathafen Neukölln 2012) about "Last Supper and Gentrification".
