Heiko Thieme

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heiko H. Thieme (born September 16, 1943 in Leipzig ) works as a portfolio manager and investment advisor of German origin in the USA and is known to the German-speaking public as a long-term optimist. His motto is: "The pessimist is the only crap on which nothing grows."

Life

Thieme grew up in Goslar and attended the Ratsgymnasium Goslar there , which he left after passing the Abitur. After studying law in Tübingen, Edinburgh, Hamburg and the USA (Berkeley), he decided not to finish his doctorate, but to work as an analyst for a British brokerage firm in Edinburgh and London . In 1979 Thieme moved to New York, where he worked for a subsidiary of Deutsche Bank and headed it after a few years.

In 1990 and the following years, Thieme founded Thieme Associates, Thieme Consulting and Thieme Securities. A short time later he acquired the American Heritage Management Corporation and became its chairman. At the same time he took over the management of the American Heritage Fund. He worked as a consultant for Deutsche Bank for several years. Thieme was best known for his optimism. For the period from 1991 to 1993, the American Heritage Fund was the most successful mutual fund in the United States. In 1995 Thieme was named the most unsuccessful fund manager of the year by the trade journal Mutual Fund, and in 1997 he was again the most successful fund manager in the USA. A protracted legal dispute with an individual investor restricted the fund in its investment decisions, so that numerous investors withdrew their investments. In the meantime the funds have been closed and the money paid out to the investors.

From 1987 to March 2003, a column by Heiko Thieme with the title Letter from Wall Street appeared in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung every Monday . In this column he published his current market assessments. He has also written articles for Der Spiegel , Capital , Stern and Focus . Thieme also works as an expert for TV programs such as the Börse am Abend on N24 or DAF (2012).

Thieme offers young people an insight into the international financial world as part of a trainee program. Among his former employees are Markus Koch ( n-tv ), Robert A. El-Gayar ( Börse Online ) and Richard Weiss ( Bloomberg TV ).

Thieme is sometimes viewed critically in the professional world. One of his main recommendations, American International Group shares , which he recommended to buy in late August 2008, suffered a loss of over 90% by mid-September 2008.

Since 1963 he has been a member of Corps Suevia Tübingen .
