Building description

A simple main nave on an area of about ten by ten meters is followed to the west by a narrower and lower choir with a straight choir closure. So the church is not east . The west gable facing the place with the entrance is designed as a viewing gable . Two double pilaster strips in contrasting colors border it. Other color fields are distributed harmoniously. Above the entrance they frame a sculpture on the subject of " Let the children come to me ". Two delicate turrets with red hoods form the top.

The interior of the church has a groin vault and some stucco decorations . The high altar and the two more elaborate side altars are baroque in design. The picture of the high altar comes from Matthias Pussjäger (1654–1734).

The sacristan's house , which is also a listed building, adjoins the church to the south .

history

The creation of calvaries was a phenomenon of the Counter Reformation . After a Calvary was built on the Virglhügel in Bolzano in 1680 and numerous South Tyrolean communities had followed the example, the Capuchins in the St. Michael Monastery decided in 1716 to build their Calvary. Seven Passion Stations and the final church on the mountain were tackled. Two more chapel shrines were added in the 19th century. The architect of the church, which was built from 1718 to 1720, was probably Giuseppe Carlo Delai from the well-known Italian master builder family. Most of the sculptures of the Passion Stations that exist today are from 1836 by Anton Rainalter (1788–1855) from Bolzano.
