The parish church Heilig Kreuz is the central church in the market town of Lana in South Tyrol .

history

Since the mother church of Lana - Assumption of Mary - was far away from the town center, the desire to build a central parish church was expressed in Lana even before the First World War . According to plans by the architect Otto Linder from Stuttgart , the foundation stone for building a new church was laid on October 30, 1938 . Since the fascist authorities were opposed to the plans of the German architect, the construction work could only be continued with great difficulty. The plans had to be submitted to the prefecture of Bolzano and approved. Furthermore, only an Italian was allowed to carry it out, whereby the architect Umberto Maffei from Rovereto agreed to implement it and made some changes. The construction work could only be completed after the end of the Second World War . The consecration of the monumental church was carried out on the Feast of Christ the King in 1950 by the auxiliary bishop of Trento Oreste Rauzi.

Architectural style

The church is modeled on the style of an early Christian basilica . The interior and the equipment is kept extremely simple. A monumental crucifixion group based on designs by the sculptor Emil Sutor from Stuttgart hangs above the high altar . The tall, narrow windows are made of stained glass .

Bells

Eight bells from the Grassmayr bell foundry in Innsbruck-Wilten hang in the 57-meter-high tower with the tuning of G 0 , A 0 , c 1 , d 1 , f 1 , g 1 , a 1 and c 2 , six of which are from 1950 Bell 2 was cast in 1952. On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the renewal of the Sacred Heart Vow of the State of Tyrol, the large Sacred Heart Bell was added in 1996 . Due to an irreparable crack, it was re-cast in 2014 while maintaining its size. The largest church bell in South Tyrol, weighing 6,205 kg and a diameter of 214 cm, is praised for its extraordinarily beautiful sound. Every first Friday of the month (the so-called Sacred Heart Friday ) at 3 p.m. it sounds at the hour of Jesus' death; on the other Fridays the trinity bell (186 cm) is rung instead .

The other bells are called the parish bell “St. Josef “ (155 cm), Marienglocke - Aveglocke (137 cm), St. Michael - warrior bell (115 cm), St. Elisabeth's bell ( 104 cm), St. Agatha's bell (93 cm) and St. George's bell (75 cm), the is rung separately as a death bell. The full bells (without the death bell) are reserved for the highest feast days.
