The holy grave in Altshausen

The Holy Sepulcher at Altshausen is a baroque holy grave made in 1763 on behalf of Landkomtur Christian Moritz Graf von Königsegg-Rothenfels in the chapel of the Holy Sepulcher in Altshausen in the Ravensburg district in Upper Swabia, built in 2002/03 on behalf of Carl Duke of Württemberg . The work of art consists of a large painted canvas, arcades and wooden picture panels. Motifs of the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus are depicted with life-size figures. Nothing is known anymore about the craftsmen and painters who carried out the work on the Holy Sepulcher.

history

Canopy with tablet

As early as the 9th century , under the influence of the pilgrimages to the Holy Land and the later Crusades, copies of the holy places were built in the West. Popular motifs were the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the grave of Christ and later scenes from the Passion of Christ.

In 1786, Landkomtur Reuttner von Weyl, in the spirit of the Josefin reforms , decreed that the erection of holy graves in the Landkommende had to be avoided. For the first time in 1804 an indication of the re-use of the Holy Sepulcher in Holy Week can be ascertained using old church service regulations . In 1837, under the diocesan bishop of Rottenburg Johann Baptist von Keller, a new order of worship was issued. The erection of holy graves in the churches of the diocese was prohibited. Pastor Faulhaber immediately enforced this decree. Parts of the Holy Sepulcher were used for scaffolding, the rest ended up on the church stage. Chaplain Wilhelm Hummel and the businessman Carl Schöttgen collected money for the restoration of the grave. In the Holy Week of 1854 it was put up again and renovated in 1883 by a Ravensburger painter. In 1921 an expensive renovation of the tomb was due again. The diocese pleaded for the preservation of the work of art, which in their opinion was now well executed. In 1955, the Holy Rites Congregation in Rome came to the conclusion that it would no longer allow the erection of holy graves. Until 2001 the Holy Sepulcher was stored in attics. In that year the Friends of the Holy Sepulcher Altshausen eV was founded. In 2002/03 Carl Herzog von Württemberg built a chapel next to the parish church of St. Michael, in which the Holy Sepulcher was permanently installed after restoration.

Grave construction

On either side there are three two-column arcades, one behind the other. Behind each arch there is a scene with wooden panels. A four-pillar arch is set up in the middle at the back. Below, behind and above him are the last three scenes. A canopy is attached over the front arcades, on which two angels hold a cartouche with an inscription that is often found in holy graves: ET ERIT SEPULCHRUM EIUS GLORIOSUM ( And his grave will be glorious ), quoted from the Vulgate ( Isa 11, 10). The capitals of the six columns towards the center are crowned by angels in different colored robes with the Arma Christi in their hands. On the left side they hold a lance with a sponge in vinegar, the handkerchief of Veronica and scourges, on the right the scourge column, the crown of thorns and the inscription INRI on the cross. The capitals towards the walls have picture panels with personalities from the Old Testament. The first figure on the left represents Jeremiah. Abraham and Aaron are placed behind him. On the right side is Isaiah in front, followed by King David and Moses.
