Holy Cross formation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Heiligkreuz formation ( Italian formazione di Heiligkreuz-Santa Croce ) is a lithostratigraphic formation of the Carnium of the southern Alpine Raibl group . It is named after the pilgrimage church Heilig Kreuz bei Abtei, South Tyrol (Badia in Ladin and Italian).

The formation formed in the Dolomites in the basins of the St. Cassian Formation and above the Cassian dolomite and carbonates of the Schlern group . The transition from the Saint Cassian Formation to the Holy Cross Formation also indicates a climatic and oceanographic change, which is also related to the death of the Upper Triassic carbonate platforms. A borehole at the foot of the Heiligkreuzkofel provided evidence of formation under oxygen deficiency and in constricted sea basins.

structure

The formation is subdivided into four sub-formations (members).

Fedares member

This member varies in thickness from 0 to over 100 meters. These are slightly bituminous rocks such as slate, marl, limestone marl and limestone. On fossils there are mass accumulations of ostracods , remains of vertebrates , snails and clamshell plasters.

Dibona member

Limes, dolomites, sandstone, siltstones and conglomerates with a lot of organic material as well as Schill banks can be found here. The thickness reaches 10 to 80 meters.

Falzarego member

The approximately 16 meter thick member consists of sandstones with layers in the decimeter range as well as clay slate and siltstone intermediate layers , which can also be rich in organic material. There are also individual conglomerate locations .

Lagazuoi members

The Lagazuoi member has a thickness of two to 20 meters, it is formed from oolites with layers of sandstone , followed by layers of dolomite in the decimeter range. There is often a discordance with breccias in the hanging wall .
