Heiner Koechlin

Heinrich Eduard "Heiner" Koechlin (born January 21, 1918 in Basel ; † May 7, 1996 there ) was a Swiss anarchist .

Life

Koechlin grew up as the second of three children in a family of doctors in Kleinhüningen . His parents were both Social Democrats , so he was treated as a "red outsider" in school. In his youth Koechlin became a socialist . Although he was an anti-militarist on the one hand , he decided to do military service because he wanted to defend Switzerland against a possible attack by Germany . Koechlin studied at the University of Basel history and in 1950 with a thesis on the Paris Commune to the Dr. phil. PhD . Around 1940 he became a member of a Swiss- Italian anarchist group in Basel. Afterwards he worked in the "Working Group of Freedom Socialists". After the Second World War , he co-founded three housing cooperatives . He wrote several books on anarchism and was a contributor and editor of several newspapers. Even today his works are read by anarchists. He was also the editor of the magazine Akratie and published articles in Liberation . In 1951 he founded an antiquarian bookshop on Spalenberg in Basel , which he ran until the end of his life and which still exists today.
