Heinrich Adolph Baumhauer
Heinrich Adolph Baumhauer (born October 26, 1848 in Bonn , † August 1, 1926 in Freiburg , Switzerland ) was a German mineralogist .
Life
Baumhauer studied from 1866 to 1869 in Bonn with Friedrich August Kekulé von Stradonitz , Hans Heinrich Landolt and Gerhard vom Rath . In 1870 he went to Göttingen and the following year became a teacher at the technical center in Frankenberg (Saxony). After brief teaching at the Hildesheim commercial school in 1872, he was a chemistry teacher at the agricultural school in Lüdinghausen / Westphalia from 1873 to 1896. From 1895 to 1925 he was professor of mineralogy and from 1906/1907 also of inorganic chemistry in Freiburg / Switzerland.
He created his own periodic table on spirals according to increasing atomic weights. He evaluated etched figures on crystals and made studies on minerals from dolomite and new minerals.
Baumhauer is considered to be the first to describe the mineral rathite .
In 1878 Baumhauer became a member of the Mineralogical Society of St. Petersburg, in 1879 an honorary member of the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland , in 1905 a member of the Mineralogical Society London and in 1926 a member of the Leopoldina - German Academy of Natural Scientists .
The rare dark gray lead arsenic sulphide Baumhauerite (Pb 3 As 4 S 9 ), which occurs in the Lengenbach mine ( Binntal , Switzerland), is named after him .
Baumhauer was the father-in-law of the physicist Albert Gockel (1860–1927), who was born in Stockach .
