Heinrich Ammann (art historian)

Heinrich Ammann (born August 12, 1914 in Tägerwilen ; † 2003 ) was a Swiss teacher , art historian and museum curator .

life and work

Heinrich Ammann, also called "Heier" by his friends, was the son of a coppersmith and grew up in Tägerwilen. He attended the Kreuzlingen teachers' seminar for four years , which was then headed by Willi Schohaus . He then worked in the "epileptic" department of the University Hospital Zurich , which enabled him to attend lectures at the University of Zurich with Heinrich Wölfflin and Gotthard Jedlicka .

From 1934 to 1958 Ammann worked as a primary school teacher in Felben , then until 1978 in Frauenfeld .

Fritz Schachermeyr encouraged Ammann to visit the Cyclades in order to a. study the murals. In the following years, Ammann worked there as a technical manager as well as a scientific supervisor.

In 1960 Ammann co-founded the «Kunstverein Frauenfeld» together with Oskar Roth, Andrea Nold , and Ernst Nägeli. In 1973 he was employed as the first curator of the Thurgau art collection in the Villa Sonnenberg in Frauenfeld, the forerunner of today's Thurgau art museum . During his time there began a regular exhibition with a regional focus, including artists such as Adolf Dietrich and Hans Brühlmann .

Heinrich Ammann was married to Berti, nee Keller, and had three children with her.
