Life

Amsinck was the fifth child of the businessman Johannes Amsinck and his wife Emilie geb. Gossler and brother of Wilhelm (1821–1909), Erdwin (* 1826), Garlieb (1831–1905) and Gustav (1837–1909). After commercial training and a two-year stay abroad in Boston , he became an authorized signatory in 1849 and a partner in the trading house Johannes Schuback & Sons in 1853 , which he continued with his brother Wilhelm Amsinck after the death of his father .

Amsinck represented the interests of the company, which is traditionally involved in South America trading, from 1854 on the Board of Directors of HAPAG and as the first General Director of the Hamburg South American Steamship Company (HSDG or Hamburg Süd ) founded in 1871 .

Amsinck also held numerous public offices in Hamburg: in 1860 the Assembly of an Honorable Merchant in Hamburg elected him to the Commerzdeputation (today's Hamburg Chamber of Commerce ), of which he was President in the year of 1864. Also in 1860 he became a member of the citizenship for the first time and belonged to it until 1864, followed by two further periods 1868–1869 and 1882–1883. He was also a member of various deputations (Deputation for Trade and Shipping 1861–1864 and 1866–1868, Bank Deputation 1863, Finance Deputation 1864–1871). From 1876 to 1882 he was also a member of the district committee of the Reichsbank main office and until his death chairman of the board of directors of the “Neue Börsenhalle” AG .

Amsinck was instrumental in separating the commercial self-administration (Chamber of Commerce) from the city administration (Senate) and, after Hamburg's annexation to the German Customs Union in 1881, campaigned for the continuation of the Hamburg free port and the construction of the Speicherstadt .
