Carl Heinrich Beiderbecke (born August 3, 1845 in Deppendorf near Bielefeld ; † May 10, 1936 in Paterson , New Jersey ) was a German missionary of the Rhenish Mission Society in what was later to become German Southwest Africa , now Namibia .

Life

Carl Heinrich Beiderbecke was born in 1845 as the son of the Deppendorf teacher Heinrich Beiderbecke. On September 24th 1875 he married Margarita, the daughter of the missionary CH Hahn.

Carl Heinrich Beiderbecke was accepted into the Barmer missionary seminar on February 22, 1868 , and received his ordination on August 16, 1871. Having arrived in Cape Town on November 16 , Beiderbecke reached Otjimbingwe on January 12, 1872 . He learned the Herero language from the missionaries Carl Hugo Hahn and Peter Heinrich Brincker and worked as a teacher at the Augustineum .

At the mission conference held in Otjimbingwe on April 20, 1873, it was decided to entrust Beiderbecke with the establishment and management of the Waterberg mission station (former name: Otjozondjupa ). The colonist and craftsman Franz Tamm was given to him to build the station. They left on November 1, 1873, and Brincker joined them in Groß Barmen . Arrived at Waterberg on November 15th, Kambazembi wa Kangombe approved the construction of a station and construction work began. Beiderbecke tried to make the Herero settle down on the Waterberg; his missionary work was aimed at them, while the catechist Baumann, who joined in 1874 , looked after the numerous Damara who lived at the Waterberg .

In 1880 Beiderbecke left the Rhenish Mission Society and went to America. Here he was pastor of a German Lutheran congregation.
