Heinrich Blasius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich Blasius (born August 9, 1883 in Berlin , † April 24, 1970 in Hamburg ) was a German physicist and university professor. His field of work was fluid mechanics. The similarity solution of the incompressible plate boundary layer is named after him.

Life

Heinrich Blasius was born in Berlin in 1883. In the years 1902–1906 he studied in Marburg and Göttingen . There he became one of the first doctoral students with Ludwig Prandtl . During this time his work on the boundary layer was created. After six years in research, in 1912 he moved to the Hamburg School of Engineering (now the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences ), where he devoted himself entirely to teaching. Heinrich Blasius celebrated his 50th anniversary with the company on April 1, 1962 and taught there until his death on April 24, 1970.

As part of his scientific work, Blasius dealt with the mathematical treatment of boundary layer equations . He was able to show that the frictional resistance of a pipe flow can be expressed by the Reynolds number . He is best known for the similarity solution of the boundary layer along the flat plate without a pressure gradient, which is called the Blasius boundary layer in his honor . During his research he published, among other things:

  • Boundary layers in liquids with low friction , Teubner Verlag, 1907
  • Laminar flow in channels of varying widths , magazine f. Math and Physics, 1910
  • The Law of Similarity in Friction Processes in Liquids , Forschg. Arb. Ing.-Wes, 1913
