Heinrich Brandt (born November 8, 1886 , Feudingen ; † October 9, 1954 , Halle ) was a German mathematician who developed the concept of the groupoid (1926).

life and work

Brandt, the son of an elementary school principal, studied at the University of Göttingen and from 1910 to 1913 at the University of Strasbourg . In 1909 he was a member of the Göttingen Wingolf . 1910 the Wingolfs connection Argentina to Strasbourg. In 1912 he received his doctorate at Heinrich Weber Dr. phil. with his dissertation on the composition of the quaternary square forms and passed the examination for the higher teaching degree (mathematics, physics, botany, zoology) a year later. In the same year he took over an assistant position at the University of Karlsruhe at short notice , but soon had to do his military service. Seriously wounded and amputated in his leg, he was released in 1916, awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class.

Brandt returned to the TH Karlsruhe and completed his habilitation there in 1917 for the subjects of mathematics and mechanics. In 1921 he received a call to the RWTH Aachen , where he was full professor for descriptive geometry and geometry . His main areas of work were composition theory of quaternary quadratic forms, bilinear transformation of quaternary quadratic forms and number theory of quaternions. Finally, in 1930 he moved to the University of Halle , where he was given the chair of mathematics. In 1932 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina Scholars' Academy . During the National Socialist era , Brandt was a supporting member of the SS and a member of other Nazi organizations. He stayed in Halle until his retirement in 1950 and was elected dean after the Second World War . Since 1949 he was a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences . Even after his retirement he taught in Halle until his death in 1954.

Martin Eichler , who continued Brandt's work on number theory of quaternions , is one of his doctoral students .

Brandt was married to Eva-Maria, daughter of the Halle zoology professor Ulrich Gerhardt .
