Heinrich Delp

Heinrich Delp (born January 31, 1878 in Darmstadt-Eberstadt ; † probably May 14, 1945 in Dachau concentration camp ) was a Darmstadt mayor ( SPD ) and social affairs officer as well as president of the state parliament of the State of Hesse .

Life

Heinrich Delp was born in Eberstadt in 1878 as the son of a businessman. After school education and a bricklayer apprenticeship, he worked as a bricklayer in Mainz. He joined the SPD in 1901 and was secretary of the construction workers' association in Mainz from 1904 and its managing director in Darmstadt from 1906.

The trained bricklayer was one of the leading figures of social democracy in the Darmstadt November Revolution of 1918/19 . He was a trade unionist in the construction workers' association and campaigned against the mass unemployment of the Weimar Republic .

Local politician

Delp had been a city councilor from 1909, an alderman from 1919 to 1933 and mayor of Darmstadt from 1926 to 1933.

Member of the state parliament

Delp was a member of the Hessian state parliament in Darmstadt from 1919 to 1933 . From 1928 to 1931 he was its president.

On March 29, 1933 Delp was arrested and taken into " protective custody ". He was released the next day, but was removed from office. In the 1930s he had connections with various resistance groups.

Delp was arrested in August 1944 after the failed assassination attempt on July 20, 1944 , and taken to the Dachau concentration camp. He died a few days after the liberation from National Socialism , probably on May 14, 1945 in the Dachau concentration camp of the consequences of his imprisonment. His grave is in the Bessunger cemetery .

Honors

The city of Darmstadt has been commemorating Heinrich Delp since 1953 by naming a street in Eberstadt.
