Heinrich Dittmers (probably * 1625 in Hamburg , † 1677 in Copenhagen ), also called Henderick Dittmars , was a German-Danish painter and engraver who worked as a Danish court painter during his lifetime .

Life

Heinrich Dittmers probably came from a Hamburg artist family. At the same time, his possible brother Gert Dittmers appears, who worked with Heinrich in Denmark and created his own works in the Hamburg area.

To complete his education Heinrich Dittmers probably undertook trips to Italy and Holland, through which he got to know the important centers of painting of his time. Around 1665 he went to Denmark and worked there at the Danish royal court as a history painter (" Schilderer") and portrait painter ("Contrefeyer"). He also made works for the nobility and the Copenhagen bourgeoisie. On December 9, 1674 he was officially appointed court painter.

Heinrich Dittmer's death date is unknown, he was buried on May 19, 1677 in Copenhagen.

Dittmer's portraits are characterized as strong, realistic and rather cool in their choice of colors. They show clear influences from the Dutch painting of his time and are often compared with the style of Abraham Wuchters , who was also active in Denmark at the time of Dittmer.

Eneboeren i sin Hule ( hermit in his cave ; a portrait of the folk artist Abraham Simon, today in the Statens Museum for Kunst ) was created in 1665 , five years later the large picture Frederik III på paradeseng ( Frederik III on the deathbed ) for Frederik's chapel III. in Roskilde Cathedral .

There are a significant number of his pictures in Denmark . The Danish National History Museum in Frederiksborg Palace shows a number of them , while others hang in the Rosenborg , Rosenholm and Gavnø castles . The self-portrait ascribed to him is now in the copper engraving collection of the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen .

Outside Denmark, the picture Hyrdernes Tilbedelse ( The Adoration of the Shepherds ) hangs in the Hamburger Kunsthalle and a male portrait in the Mauritshuis in The Hague .

There are two portraits known Dittmer in mezzotint executed technique, one of which shows the Danish King Christian V .

Some of Dittmar's works were engraved by Johan Martin Preisler and others.
