Heinrich Giese

Father Heinrich Giese SVD (born October 1, 1863 in Voßwinkel ; † June 19, 1937 in Mödling near Vienna ) was court counselor in Vienna and confessor of Emperor Franz Joseph I , reformer of teacher training in Austria, founder of homes for girls and children, Vice-President of the “Austrian Caritas Association”, President of the Caritas Association of the Archdiocese of Vienna .

Life

Heinrich Giese was the son of the miller and fruit trader Kaspar Heinrich Giese (* 1837 in Voßwinkel, today Arnsberg) and Anna Maria Wimhöfer (* 1845 in Müschede , today Arnsberg).

In October 1880 Heinrich Giese entered the mission order " Society of the Divine Word " as a missionary student , which was founded by Father Arnold Janssen in 1875 in Steyl . Heinrich Giese was ordained a priest on July 23, 1889. In November of the same year he began to study at Minerva , the Dominican University in Rome. When he acquired the venia docendi there in July 1891 , the order appointed him professor of theology in the priestly training of the Steyler missionaries in the St. Gabriel Missionary House near Vienna, where he initially taught dogmatics and all other theological subjects.

In 1904 Heinrich Giese was appointed director of the Catholic private teacher training institute in Vienna and in May 1919 he was appointed as a recognized school specialist to the Vienna City School Board. In 1929 Heinrich Giese was awarded the title of court councilor and appointed consistorial councilor.

When he was seventy, the Federal President awarded him the Officer's Cross of the Austrian Order of Merit . On the ecclesiastical side, he was appointed to the diocesan school board and the examination committee for elementary and secondary schools. He became head of a section of the Catholic Charity Association for Lower Austria, later Vice President of the "Austrian Caritas Association" and, after a reorganization of the Catholic association, first President of the Caritas Association for the Archdiocese of Vienna .

In Vienna, Währing district , a street was named after Heinrich Giese, Giesestrasse. The street only had this name in the years 1937 and 1938, before and after the renaming the street was (was) called Michaelerstraße .
