Heinrich Hein

Heinrich Hein (* 1590 in Rostock ; † 1666 ) was a Livonian theologian and legal scholar of German descent.

Life and science

In 1632 the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf founded a university in Tartu, Livonia (German Dorpat ). The college was named Academia Gustaviana . Only six years earlier, Sweden had conquered the city of Tartu from Poland .

The theologian Heinrich Hein from Rostock was called to the new university in the year it was founded. Heinrich Hein was the son of the Rostock professor of law Friedrich Hein (1533-1604). From 1603 he studied at the university in his hometown.

From 1632 to 1656 Heinrich Hein was the first professor to hold the chair of law at the University of Dorpat . In 1633/34, 1639/40, 1648/49 and 1655/56 Hein was rector of the University of Dorpat.

He also worked as an assessor at the court in Tartu. The corresponding letter of recommendation from Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna to the Swedish Governor General in Livonia, Gabriel Bengtsson Oxenstierna , is dated February 12, 1646.

Private life

Heinrich Hein was close to the movement of the Rosicrucians around Johann Valentin Andreae . In Tartu, Hein tried to build a like-minded circle.

Hein was the owner of the Taabri estate ( Anrepshof ) near Tartu . In 1646 the Swedish Queen Christina Hein confirmed her claims to the estate.
