Henry III. (Limburg)

Henry III. (* around 1140; † June 21, 1221 in Klosterrath ) was Duke of Limburg and Count of Arlon from 1165 until his death. He was the son of Duke Heinrich II and Matilde von Saffenberg . In 1172 he fought against Henry IV , Count of Luxembourg, and his allies Baldwin V , Count of Hainaut , with the area around Arlon being devastated. In 1183 he supported the election of Folmar von Kardens as Archbishop of Trier and stood against Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa .

Heinrich took part in the Third Crusade with his son Walram . They traveled independently of the main army of Emperor Barbarossa and joined Richard the Lionheart's army in the Holy Land .

For the Bailiwick of Sint-Truiden he had to assert himself against his nephew Heinrich I , Duke of Brabant , who claimed the office as part of his mother's trousseau. The war ended in 1191, with the Duke of Limburg becoming a vassal of the Duke of Brabant. To the investiture in the diocese of Liège is Henry III. got into a quarrel with Count Baldwin V of Hainaut , by whom he was defeated and captured on August 1, 1194 with his eldest son in the battle of Noville .

In the last years of his life, Heinrich III supported. Otto von Braunschweig against Philipp von Schwaben in the fight for the German crown. In 1214 he took part in the Battle of Bouvines .

His first marriage was around 1165 with Sophia von Saarbrücken (around 1149; † after 1215), daughter of Simon I , Count of Saarbrücken , and Mathilde von Sponheim.
