Heinrich Karl Brandes
Johann Heinrich Karl Brandes (born February 10, 1798 in Salzuflen ; † January 29, 1874 there ) was a German high school teacher and travel writer .
Life
Brandes' father Johann Gottlieb Brandes (1751-1816) was a pharmacist in Salzuflen. Heinrich Karl attended high school in Detmold , studied classical philology at the universities of Göttingen , Jena and Halle . In 1818 he became a member of the original fraternity in Jena. After the state examination in Münster, he was employed as a full teacher at the grammar school in Elberfeld in January 1823, where he also held the position of provisional vice-principal .
He was arrested in February 1824 on charges of " demagogic " activities and taken to Berlin. Although his Elberfeld employers certified that he was behaving correctly, he was only released from custody in Köpenick and Spandau in 1829 and took up a position as vice-principal at the grammar school in Lemgo in 1829 , where he held the position of headmaster from 1833 until he retired in 1868 . He died on January 29, 1874 in his hometown of Salzuflen.
His older brother was the pharmacist and chemist Rudolph Brandes .
meaning
In addition to theological and philological writings, Brandes is best known for numerous publications in which he described his own travels that took him to Scandinavia and the northern Mediterranean countries. After retiring, he even visited India and Egypt .
Brandes is said to have bequeathed his extensive library to the Lemgoer Gymnasium.
