Heinrich Kunstmann (Slavist)

Heinrich Kunstmann (born March 4, 1923 in Regensburg , † February 17, 2009 in Prien am Chiemsee ) was a German Slavist and translator of Polish contemporary literature and professor at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

Life

Heinrich Kunstmann studied Slavic Studies and received his doctorate in 1950 with a dissertation on prepositional leaning constructions under Božena Němcová at the University of Hamburg . He was mainly concerned with the history of German-Slavic relations in the early Middle Ages.

He translated u. a. Plays by Witold Gombrowicz , Witkacy , Sławomir Mrożek as well as works by Zbigniew Herbert and Ireneusz Iredyński and radio plays. He was friends with the Polish writer Tymoteusz Karpowicz (1921–2005) and for more than thirty years he had a lot of correspondence with him.
