history

The city was originally known as Saccarappa and was named after the Saccarappa Falls on the Presumpscot River . It was a part of Falmouth (now Portland, Maine) until February 14, 1814, when it became independent as the Stroudwater Ward. Soon the parish changed its name to Westbrook after Colonel Thomas Westbrook , a commander during the Dummer's War , who was given the title of King's mast agent in 1727 and who was one of the early settlers and mill operators. In 1871 Deering was separated as an independent town, which in 1889 became part of Portland. In 1891 Westbrook was incorporated as a City.

Natural phenomenon

On the Presumpscot River in January 2019, the current of the river formed a rotating ice circle with a diameter of about 90 m . The ice circle attracted a lot of media interest and many visitors traveled to Westbrook to see the ice circle.

Economy and Infrastructure

The former largest employer in the region was the SD Warren paper mill in Westbrook. It has been part of the South African Sappi Group since the mid-1990s . Before that, it belonged to the US company Scott and was the world's largest manufacturer of coated paper . In 1956 the manufacturer Johann Wilhelm Zanders from Bergisch Gladbach acquired the license for this manufacturing process for his Zanders paper mill .
