The Heinrich Meins fishing ship was the first stern catcher to fly the German flag.

history

The ship was commissioned by Bremerhaven Gemeinwirtschaftliche Hochseefischerei GmbH (GHG). The ship was named after Heinrich Meins, a member of the cooperative , who was the chairman of the GEG from 1953 to 1968.

The Heinrich Meins was launched on March 6, 1957 as hull number 290 at the Bremerhaven-based Rickmers shipyard and was delivered on May 31, 1957.

The ship ran until 1970 under his Baunamen and carried the fishing license plate BX 655. 1970 acquired the fishing company John E. Stathakis & Sons Piraeus the factory ship and put it under the name Koutouriaris S. V a. In 1973 the ship was extended and converted into a pure stern catcher. On May 14, 1975 the trawler caught fire about 200 nautical miles east of Nuevo Gulf, Argentina and was then abandoned. On April 23, 1976, the damaged vessel was towed to Puerto Madryn, where it later sank at the pier and was partially scrapped in situ .

technology

At the end of the 1950s, stern catchers with diesel engines began to replace the fish steamers. The shipyard adopted the construction principle based on the previous British experimental buildings Oriana and Fairfree , the first real factory tail-catcher Fairtry and the larger Pushkin trawler series of the Kiel Howaldtswerke intended for export to the USSR . After the Heinrich Meins, Rickmers only built two side catchers. In general, side catcher construction in Germany also ended in 1961.

The ship also became famous for its innovative propulsion system. The two drive motors each acted on Voith-Schneider propellers arranged in front and each driven a shaft generator at the same time . The background to this arrangement were fears that the net to be hauled in via the stern lift could get into screws attached aft. However, the drive concept did not prove itself and with other rear catchers with screws arranged aft there was no damage to the net or screws. Therefore, the Heinrich Meins propulsion system was later replaced by a diesel-electric propulsion system with two conventional propellers arranged aft.

A number of other facilities that were advanced at the time were also installed on board. The ship had a fresh water generator , Baader fish processing lines, plate freezers, fresh, salt and frozen fish rooms, a drink boiler and tanks as well as a fish meal system and bunker.
