Heinrich Mette

Johann Peter Christian Heinrich Mette (born June 14, 1735 in Ditfurt ; † August 17, 1806 in Quedlinburg ) was a German gardener , entrepreneur and co-founder of the seed industry in Quedlinburg.

Life

Mette was born the son of a hunter and field guard. From 1750 to 1753 he completed an apprenticeship as a gardener in the abbey garden of the Quedlinburger Reichsstift with the gardener Johann Heinrich Ziemann . This was followed by a journey of several years through Germany. Ultimately, he settled in Quedlinburg and founded the Heinr nursery . Mette . In 1784 he leased the approximately 20 hectare Dechaneigarten of the Quedlinburg monastery. Like Martin Grasshoff before , Mette devoted himself to horticultural seed production. In 1792 he introduced extensive semen production. Before that, the trade in young plants was common at this time, but this caused difficulties due to the poor traffic conditions. Mette also ran an orangery , where he also grew exotic plants such as jasmine , carob , laurel , oleander , oranges , bitter oranges and lemons . From 1794 his son worked in his company, which took over the company in 1802.

In Quedlinburg, the vocational school JPC Heinrich Mette Quedlinburg bears his name.
