Heinrich Moritz Gaede , also French Henri Gaede, (born March 26, 1796 in Kiel , † January 2, 1834 in Liège ) was a German zoologist and botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Gaede ".

Education

Gaede studied in Kiel with Christian Rudolf Wilhelm Wiedemann , a medicine professor who was also known as an entomologist, and in Berlin with Karl Asmund Rudolphi . He initially dealt with the comparative anatomy of insects, but became known through a treatise on Medusa (1816). In 1817 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the anatomy of insects and worms. He then received a royal Danish scholarship to travel to Italy.

career

On the recommendation of Rudolphi, Gaede became the first professor of natural history (botany, comparative anatomy, mineralogy, geology, zoology) at the newly founded University of Liège and director of the university's botanical garden in 1818 . In 1828 he published a catalog of the plants in the local botanical garden. In 1822/23 he was rector of the university. His chair, which his close colleague Richard Courtois wanted, was threatened by an illness of Gaede and the events in Belgium in 1830 ( Belgian Revolution ). Gaede remained in the chair until his untimely death.

He was deeply religious (he originally considered becoming a pastor) and advocated animal welfare.

Memberships

In 1819 Gaede became a member of the Leopoldina . He left behind a collection of insects, a herbarium of almost 5800 plants and a collection of minerals which the University of Liège acquired.

Gaede was a member and first president of the Liège Horticultural Society. Here, as in the Botanical Garden, he worked with Richard Courtois.
