Heinrich Wilhelm Petersen-fishing , born Heinrich Wilhelm Petersen (born April 4, 1850 in Westerholz , fishing ; † April 23, 1906 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter.

Life

Heinrich Petersen-fishing was born as Heinrich Wilhelm Petersen in Westerholz on the Flensburg Fjord as the son of a restaurateur and farmer. He took the addition of his birth landscape, fishing, to his name in Düsseldorf in 1883, when another painter named Heinrich Petersen was working there (from then on he called himself Heinrich Petersen-Flensburg). After training as a painter and serving as a soldier in the Franco-German War , he attended the Berlin Art Academy from 1873 , where he a. a. took lessons from Karl Gussow . Between 1879 and 1883 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under the landscape painter Eugen Dücker .

Petersen fishing is best known as a marine painter and creator of atmospheric harbor views. He first found his motifs on the Baltic Sea, from 1882 increasingly on the Dutch North Sea coast, where port views of Vlissingen and Harlingen were created. From 1882 he belonged to the Ekensund artists' colony , where local and foreign artists met every year to try out the possibilities of open-air painting. Further study trips took him to Belgium , France , Italy and Norway . In Egmond in North Holland Petersen Fishing attended the Art Summer School of George Hitchcock .

Until well into the 1890s, Petersen-fishing was a very popular artist, who showed his pictures at large art exhibitions all over Germany and achieved a certain prosperity through selling them. He met the conservative taste of his customers and his success is considered a phenomenon of the early days .
