Heinrich Schenk (Bishop)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich Schenk († August 26 or November 25, 1301 ) was Bishop of Kulm .

Of unknown origin, he probably came from a family of ministers. As a priest of the Teutonic Order , he is recorded as a canon in Kulm in 1291, where he was elected bishop at the turn of 1291/92. Shortly after his election, Schenk traveled to Riga , where he was confirmed in office and ordained bishop by Archbishop Johannes von Vechta before March 5, 1292.

In the following years Heinrich Schenk repeatedly acted as a mediator in disputes. He also traveled to the General Chapters of the Teutonic Order in Frankfurt (October 1292) and Elbing (April 1296). As a bishop he was able to successfully end the property disputes with the Bishop of Plock in 1293 , but there were again disputes regarding membership of the metropolitan area with the Archbishop of Gniezno , from whose province Kulm had changed to the ecclesiastical province of Riga in 1255 .
