Johann Heinrich Schrörs (born November 26, 1852 in Krefeld , † June 11, 1928 in Bonn ) was a German Roman Catholic priest and theologian .

Life

He studied theology in Bonn , Würzburg and Innsbruck , where he studied with Josephus Jungmann . In 1877 he was ordained a priest in Innsbruck and in 1885 professor of canon law in Freiburg im Breisgau . In the following year, with the support of Friedrich Althoff, he received the chair for church history at the University of Bonn . In Bonn he was dean of the university five times (1891/1892, 1900/1901, 1902/1903, 1906/1907, 1914/1915).

In 1887 he founded one of the first ecclesiastical history seminars in Germany and built up a well-equipped seminar library that was destroyed in the Second World War. Schrörs devoted himself to questions of university policy, especially with regard to his insistence on the principle of scientific training for theologians. His views on education led to years of open conflict with the Archdiocese of Cologne .
