Heinrich Speyer (born July 1, 1897 in Frankfurt am Main ; died October 7, 1935 there ) was a German orientalist .

life and work

He studied with Josef Horovitz at the Oriental Seminary at the University of Frankfurt , where he received his doctorate in 1921 . Around 1934 he had a job at the rabbinical seminary in Breslau .

Speyer's main work The Biblical Tales in the Qoran contains a detailed list of reminiscences from the Book of Psalms in the Koran - no fewer than 141. The relationship between Sura 55 and Psalm 136 and between Sura 78 and Psalm 104 is highlighted as an example . Angelika Neuwirth points out that the evaluation, i. H. Investigation of the psalm echoes in the Koran has so far remained largely unexplored. Franz Rosenthal describes The Biblical Tales in the Qoran as the most extensive and detailed work to date, which deals with the Jewish, Christian, as well as Gnostic and Samaritan parallels to the biblical text material in the Koran.

The biblical stories in the Qoran were printed in 1935, shortly before Speyer's death. However, the publisher's imprint of the first edition indicates the year 1931, probably for political reasons. After 1935, “Jewish” books were no longer allowed to be printed in National Socialist Germany , and so it was decided to postdate. The book was reprinted for the first time in 1961.
