Johann Heinrich Ludolf Steinike (born May 5, 1825 in Bollinghausen near Leer , † September 20, 1909 in Düsseldorf ) was a German landscape painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Steinike, son of a Hanoverian magistrate , attended the higher trade school in Hanover, which later became the polytechnic , after finishing the Progymnasium Leer . Until the winter semester of 1843/1844, he took the subjects of hand drawing and bossing there . He then attended the academy in Berlin and trained as a painter in Cologne . At the Mauritshuis in The Hague , he studied the old masters on his own. After his attempt to gain a foothold as a painter in his East Frisian homeland failed, he undertook study trips to Norway and Italy ( Rome ) in 1851 . In February 1852 he settled in Düsseldorf. There he became a member of the artists' association Malkasten . On July 10, 1857, he married Engelberta Elisabeth Maria Walburga Josepha Barutzky (* 1827), the daughter of the Kreis-Kassen-Rendanten Carl Barutzky. There were five children from this marriage.

When the "Association for Insect Science on the Lower Rhine" was founded in Düsseldorf in January 1866 under the Prussian officer and entomologist August Schultze , the painters Steinike and Heinrich Ludwig Freshness were among the founding members. In 1884 the association was merged into the newly founded "Natural Science Association".

Every year Steinike made long journeys to find motifs for his large-format landscapes. In 1879 his name was on the list of Düsseldorf artists in need of support.
