Heinrich Uranius

Heinrich Uranius (also Henricus Uranius Ressensis ; * 1492 in Rees  , † December 6, 1572 in Emmerich ) was a German humanist and rector of the school of scholars in Emmerich.

Life

Born in Rees as Heinrich von dem / aus den Himmel in Pfaffenstrasse (today Kapitelstrasse) and attending elementary school, he called himself Henricus Uranius or Henricus Ressensis (from Rees) as a humanist. He studied philosophy and theology. He was a teacher for 55 years, from 1558 to 1572 he headed the grammar school in Emmerich. One of his sponsors was Andreas Masius , the founder of the University of Duisburg . His scientific merits are particularly in the study of the Hebrew language .

The epitaph in the Emmerich Church of St. Martini paid tribute to him:

Hendricus iacet, hac gelida tellure sepultus,

Uranius, nostra Gymnasiarcha scholae,

Qui tribus in linguis, nec dogmate clarus in uno

Aeternum peperit noun ubique sibi.

  1. In the literature, around 1500 is often given. In E. Wassenbergi Embricensis Embrica Sive Urbis Embricensis Descriptio: Libri Tres (Clivia 1667), III, p. 281, an epitaph is reproduced on which the date of death (VIII. Iduum Dec.) is 79 years of age.
