Heinrich Ursprung (biologist)

Heinrich Klaus Peter Ursprung (born March 13, 1932 in Bad Zurzach ) is a Swiss biologist and science manager. He was President of the ETH Zurich , President of the Swiss School Council and State Secretary for Science and Research.

Life

Originally he went to school in his place of birth, Zurzach, and graduated from the Aarau Cantonal School in 1952, where he joined the Argovia secondary school . He then studied natural sciences at the University of Zurich , in 1956 he graduated with a "Diploma as a natural scientist". In 1959 he received his doctorate in biology. He then went to the USA, from 1961 and 1969 he worked as research assistant and assistant professor, associate professor and finally full professor at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore , Maryland .

In 1969 he was appointed professor of zoology at the ETH Zurich, where he mainly dealt with developmental biology. From 1973 to 1987 he was President of the ETH Zurich and from 1987 to 1990 President of the Swiss School Council. Between 1990 and 1997 he was director of the “Group for Science and Research” in the Federal Department of Home Affairs, and from 1992 he held the title of State Secretary.
