Heinrich Völkel (born February 1, 1925 in Erndtebrück , † December 10, 1992 in Langenfeld ) was a German politician ( SPD ). He was a city ​​councilor and deputy mayor of the city of Langenfeld (Rhineland) for 40 years .

Life

Heinrich Völkel was born the son of a factory worker. After the family moved to Langenfeld in 1938, he attended elementary school in Reusrath . As a 13-year-old, he saw the burning remains of the synagogue in Hauptstrasse and witnessed attacks by the National Socialists on Jewish citizens. After the war he worked as a saddler and upholsterer at the Bundesbahn repair shop in Opladen . There he began to be a union member in 1949 .

On April 1, 1950, Völkel joined the SPD. In 1952 he arrived as substitutes in the Langenfeld city council. From 1960 to 1984 he worked as managing director of the SPD in the Mettmann district , first in the old Rhein-Wupper district and then in the Rheinisch-Bergischen district . From 1962 to 1987 he chaired the SPD parliamentary group in the CDU-dominated city council. From 1966 to 1975 and from 1979 to 1989 he was the deputy mayor of Langenfeld. As chairman of the planning committee for many years , he helped shape urban development sustainably.

Honors

Völkel was awarded the Langenfeld Ring of Honor in 1973. In 1979 he received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon . On his 40-year membership in the city council in 1992, he was the second Langenfelder after Hans Litterscheid to be granted honorary citizenship of the city.

The sports facility on Burgstrasse in Immigrath , which was handed over to the Hucklenbruch sports club in 1995, bears his name. In 1992 he became honorary chairman of the allotment garden association "Im Bärenbusch", which he co-founded.
