As a member of the Staufer party , he traveled a lot on behalf of Friedrich Barbarossa . On his return from one of these missions, Heinrich drowned at the mouth of the Tagliamento . He is buried in the Rosazzo monastery in Friuli . His brother Hermann was his successor in the Carinthian ducal office .

Heinrich was married to Elisabeth, daughter of Margrave Leopold von Steier , widow after Count Rudolf II of Stade's murder († 1144); they had no children.
