Henry VI. usher
Henry VI. Porter (* in Unterspiesheim , today Kolitzheim ; † October 5, 1646 in Ebrach ) was abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Ebrach from 1641 to 1646 .
Life
Henry VI. Pförtner was born in the second half of the 16th or the first half of the 17th century in Unterspiesheim, Lower Franconia , which is now part of the Kolitzheim community. The sources are silent about the parents of the future abbot, and any siblings are not mentioned. Heinrich probably attended a Latin school , perhaps in nearby Schweinfurt , and entered the Cistercian monastery in Ebrach at a young age.
During the occupation of the abbey by the Protestant Swedes in the Thirty Years' War , young Heinrich fled to the primary monastery of Clairvaux in France. He stayed here for four years before returning to Franconia. He rose quickly in the impoverished monastery: he was soon appointed subprior before Heinrich became parish vicar in the monastery village of Burgwindheim and looked after the community here during the war.
After the death of his predecessor John VI. Pfister , the monks elected Heinrich as his successor on October 17, 1641. As abbot, Heinrich demanded a return to regular monastic life; compliance with the statutes had suffered during the long war. Under him the penitential belts for the monks were introduced and night vigils were set up. A rapid illness that prostrated the abbot for three weeks led to his death on October 5, 1646.
