Unterspiesheim is a district of the municipality of Kolitzheim in the southern district of Schweinfurt in Lower Franconia with 1204 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2012).

history

Numerous finds of objects from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age bear witness to the early settlement of the area. Unterspiesheim (as a double settlement with Oberspiesheim) was first mentioned in a document in 747 as "Spiezesheim". Around the year 900 the settlement was a farming and craft village. The place was first listed as a separate settlement in 1248.

The ancestors of Johannes Cuspinian (humanist and diplomat 1473–1529) come from Ober- or Unterspiesheim.

In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria , the municipality of Kolitzheim was created with the municipal edict of 1818 . It became part of the former district of Gerolzhofen . On May 1, 1978, the community of Unterspiesheim was assigned to today's Kolitzheim community in the course of the Bavarian community reform .

In the First and Second World Wars , 37 Unterspiesheimers died in battles or as prisoners of war. On April 10 and 11, 1945 there was an artillery duel between the German flak and American tanks at the Unkenmühle. Numerous buildings in the village were damaged.
