Gernach is a district of Kolitzheim in the Lower Franconian district of Schweinfurt .

Geographical location

Gernach is surrounded by a varied landscape of forests, small lakes and farmland. The specialty culture asparagus and fruit growing are particularly at home here. The vineyards typical of Franconia can be found in the surrounding villages.

history

The place Gernach was first mentioned in 1141 as "Gerneche". Presumably the village, together with Garstadt and Hirschfeld, was an important hunting area, the name is probably derived from the hunting yarn. The Heidenfeld Abbey near Schweinfurt was enfeoffed with Gernach by its founder Alberada after it was founded in 1069. In 1141 Gernach became part of the large parish of Wipfeld and from then on completely incorporated into the monastery. With interruptions, Gernach remained part of the monastery property until secularization in the 19th century.

As part of the regional reform , it was incorporated into Kolitzheim in 1978.

Attractions

The Church of St. Giles in Gernach

The center of the village is the Catholic branch church of St. Giles. Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn had the tower rebuilt in 1614 , and the nave was rebuilt in 1787. Many elements of the furnishings go back to the Würzburg sculptor Johann Peter Wagner . The organ was fitted with a new work in 1968, but the prospectus from around 1730 has been preserved.

Another small church is the so-called forest chapel on the outskirts; it is also called the wolf chapel. It goes back to the foundation of a Father von Heidenfeld. In 1850 the chapel was demolished and replaced with a wayside shrine. Today there is a building there from 1950. A wooden pietà dates from 1845. In the vicinity there is a so-called cross tug , the Christ carrying the cross , from the 18th century.

As a Catholic church village, there are many wayside shrines and small memorials from different centuries in and around Gernach . The oldest of these religious monuments date back to the 17th century, while the youngest were created in the 20th century.
