history
Herlheim is one of the older villages in the area. Already in pre- and early historical period of the so-called Kappel hill was populated. There, between Herlheim and the Herleshof , there was a place of worship that was later built over by a Christian chapel. The foundation walls of this church were opened up during excavations. Herlheim was first mentioned as early as 706, at that time it was called "Herilindesheim" and, like the Herleshof, was named after the noble Herilind.
In 742 the Würzburg diocese was endowed with a total of 25 royal own churches by the Carolingian caretaker Karlmann . Among them was the church in Herlheim. In 1271 the brothers Hermann I and Heinrich II. Zu Castell - meanwhile the church had come into their hands - left the parish to the Cistercian convent of Maidbronn . Later the Ebrach Monastery acquired most of the goods in the village and soon also owned the village.
During the Thirty Years War the village was captured by Swedish troops. The soldiers robbed the residents and tortured some of them. At that time, there was still a wide ditch in the center of the village, along which the houses were lined up. Only in the 19th century did the residents fill the ditch. Today Herlheim is part of the Kolitzheim community in the Schweinfurt district.
Culture and sights
Architectural monuments
The center of the village is the Catholic parish church of St. James the Elder. The village was an independent parish as early as the 13th century, but the church at that time was in a different location. The oldest element of the existing church is the tower, called "fat Michel". It was built in 1600 under the reign of Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn . The tower was built as a choir tower.
The nave was built between 1717 and 1723, with Joseph Greissing from Würzburg as the master builder . The west facade is decorated with figures that were erected in 1852. The portal shows the coat of arms of the Ebrach abbot Wilhelm I. Sölner , the sunflower. The altars inside were created between 1730 and 1740 and reflect the splendor of the baroque with their altar leaves depicting the Descent from the Cross , Saint Joseph and the Annunciation of Mary .
Many wayside shrines and small monuments were donated in the Herlheim area of the typically Catholic village in Franconia . The wayside shrines mostly date from the 18th and 19th centuries and were set up by private individuals. Several buildings from the old village have been preserved. The courtyard portals in Herlheim are a specialty . The most ornate one is on Herlindenstrasse and is decorated with a relief of the Trinity and plastic figures of saints.
legend
A legend is about He-he, who is supposed to be up to mischief in the Hörnau forest near Herlheim. The Alitzheim teacher was late in the Herlheim inn and the local blacksmith Augustin Götz offered him to take the nocturnal route through the Hörnau with him. On the way, however, the blacksmith's pipe head got lost and the two men could not find it despite a long search.
The blacksmith shouted: "He-he, if you help me find my new pipe bowl, I'll give the first poor man I meet tomorrow a penny ." Immediately a man with a lantern stood next to the blacksmith and the pipe bowl could be found. The smith lifted his head and thanked the He-he. The next day he kept his promise.
