Heinz Georg Wagner (chemist)

Heinz Georg Wagner (born September 20, 1928 in Hof (Saale) ; † July 29, 2020 in Göttingen ) was a German chemist .

Life

Heinz Georg Wagner worked in the field of physical chemistry . Since 1971 he was director of the physical-chemical institute of the University of Göttingen and head of the department " reaction kinetics " as well as a member of the board of directors of the Max Planck Institute for Flow Research in Göttingen. Since 1988 he has been Deputy President of the Board of Trustees of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) Braunschweig and Berlin and curator of the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin. He made decisive contributions in the field of the kinetics of gas and combustion reactions, especially under the aspect of the formation of soot . Further areas of work were the investigation of explosion and detonation processes and the mode of operation of separating columns .

Wagner received numerous prizes, honors and honorary doctorates, including an honorary doctorate from Heidelberg University and the DECHEMA medal in 1997 . In 1981 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . He was also a member of the Academia Europaea and the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

In addition, Heinz Georg Wagner has made great contributions to science policy, including serving as Vice President of the German Research Foundation (DFG) for many years .
