Heinz Goerke

Heinz Goerke (born December 13, 1917 in Allenstein ; † June 16, 2014 ) was a German medical historian and university professor. For many years he was the Medical Director of the Großhadern Clinic . Goerke wrote several monographs on art and technology in medicine. He received honorary doctorates from Lund and Istanbul Universities .

Life

Due to a professional move of his family, he grew up in Potsdam , where he graduated from high school in 1937. From 1939 he studied medicine with interruptions due to the Second World War and called up as a military doctor . In 1962 he was appointed professor for the history of medicine at the Free University of Berlin . In 1969 Goerke moved to Munich, where he was Medical Director of the Großhadern Clinic from 1970 to 1982 . He was also the first director of the German Medical History Museum , which he initiated and opened in 1973.

With Walter Artelt , Edith Heischkel and Gunter Mann (1924–1992) Goerke was editor of the journal Medizinhistorisches Journal .

The Association of Friends and Supporters of the Medical Faculty of the LMU Munich has been awarding the Heinz Goerke Medal since 2015.
