Walter Artelt

Walter Artelt (born July 23, 1906 in Warmbrunn , † January 26, 1976 in Königstein im Taunus ) was a German doctor , dentist and medical historian .

Life

Walter Artelt received his doctorate in 1929. As a student of Paul Diepgen and Max Wellmann in Berlin , Artelt was among other things head of the collection of the Research Institute for the History of Dentistry until 1938 . He took over the office of medical historian as the successor to the founder, the Jewish medical historian Curt Proskauer . From 1938 until his retirement in 1971 he was head of the Senckenberg Institute for the History of Medicine at the University of Frankfurt am Main . Artelt joined the NSDAP in 1941 . At the University of Frankfurt Artelt was an associate professor from 1942 and associate professor from 1952. Professor and from 1958 full professor and rector 1962/63.

From 1950 to 1955 Artelt was chairman of the German Society for the History of Medicine, Natural Sciences and Technology . In 1952 Artelt was elected to the Leopoldina Scholars' Academy .

Together with Heinz Goerke , Edith Heischkel and Gunter Mann (1924–1992) Artelt was editor of the medical historical journal .

The medical historian Edith Heischkel-Artelt was his wife. After the couple, Prof. Dr. Walter Artelt and Prof. Dr. Edith Heischkel – Artelt – Foundation .
