Heinz Kunle (born December 15, 1928 in Lörrach ; † January 5, 2012 ) was a German mathematician who dealt with geometry .

Life

Kunle studied mathematics and physics in Freiburg, received his doctorate in 1953 from the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg under Gerrit Bol (on the projective kinematics of single-parameter quadric groups) . He completed his habilitation in Freiburg in 1960 and was associate professor for geometry at the University of Karlsruhe (then TH Karlsruhe) from 1962, and full professor from 1963. From 1965 to 1967 he was dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences I, from 1970 to 1975 prorector of the university and from 1983 to 1994 rector. In 1968 he founded a department of mathematics didactics at the University of Karlsruhe. As rector, he expanded the university's international cooperation (France, e.g. double diplomas in Karlsruhe and ENSAM (Arts et Métiers ParisTech) in Paris, Russia, Bulgaria, Hungary) and the research focus. During his time, the number of DFG-funded SFBs at the university increased from three to ten and the third-party funding doubled.

From 2000 to 2008 he headed the university council of the Karlsruhe University of Education , of which he was honorary senator. He was also an honorary senator of the Karlsruhe University of Music and the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg (1993). He was also for many years Vice-President of the Conference of University Rectors and was involved in the founding of the Franco-German University in Saarbrücken in 1999 and in the European Confederation of Upper Rhine Universities (EUCOR).

He was awarded three honorary doctorates, received the Federal Cross of Merit First Class, in 1998 the Medal of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg and the Medal of the City of Strasbourg and was a Knight of the Legion of Honor .

He played the piano as a hobby. Kunle was married and had three children.
