Heinz Patzig (born September 19, 1929 in Chemnitz ; † March 28, 2013 in Braunschweig ) was a German football player and coach. He completed a total of 247 games in the first-class Oberliga Nord for VfB Lübeck and Eintracht Braunschweig and worked as Eintracht's assistant coach for a long time. His greatest success as an assistant coach was winning the German soccer championship in 1967.

Career as a player

Heinz Patzig played in his hometown of Chemnitz until 1950. There he played a few games for PSV Chemnitz and between 1948 and 1950 also for Fewa Chemnitz . He then fled the GDR to West Germany and went to VfB Lübeck. For Lübeck, the offensive left winger, who is considered a strong header, played a total of four years in the Oberliga Nord and the amateur league Schleswig-Holstein. In 59 league games Patzig scored 17 goals and was called up for one game in the north German football team. In the game against the southwest German team, Patzig showed a good performance, which is why he was persuaded by the North German team coach Edmund Conen to play for Eintracht Braunschweig in the future.

At Eintracht Patzig came from 1955 and 1961 to a total of 188 league appearances and three appearances in the finals of the German championship. After moving to Eintracht, he quickly developed into a regular player and was still appointed to various national teams, such as the Lower Saxony soccer team. After a knee injury in 1961, Patzig rarely made appearances in the league and ended his career at the age of 31.

Career as a coach

Apart from a few games in which he was head coach at Eintracht Braunschweig, Heinz Patzig was mainly active as an assistant coach. Shortly after the end of his active career, he took up his position as assistant coach and won the German championship together with Helmuth Johannsen in 1967. Patzig acted as assistant coach for Eintracht for a total of 27 seasons, working with Otto Knefler , Branko Zebec , Werner Olk and Heinz Lucas , among others . Patzig also took over the team as interim coach four times. In 1991 he was replaced by Uwe Kliemann .
