Heinz Saalig (born July 6, 1922 in Frankfurt am Main ; † March 8, 2007 in Frankfurt am Main) was a German painter and sculptor of Neo-Expressionism .

Life

Heinz Saalig was born in Frankfurt am Main. From 1937 to 1939 he trained as a metalworker apprentice. After being a prisoner of war during the Second World War , Saalig studied from 1947 to 1954 at the Städel Art Institute in Frankfurt am Main in the class of the sculptor Hans Mettel . In 1954 he married the visual artist Elena Saalig (née Stoltz, 1924–2011).

In the years 1958–1964 Saalig was a private student of the painter Leo Grewenig in Bensheim. In 1964 he acquired his master's certificate as a glass painter . He made up for the Abitur, which was prevented by the war, in 1969 at the evening grammar school in Frankfurt . This then enabled him to study art education , art history , archeology , philosophy and psychology in Frankfurt am Main.

In 1972, Heinz Saalig and his young family settled in a studio and residential building that is part of the reform urban development Frankfurt-Riederwald by architect Ernst May . From there, Saalig worked as a freelance sculptor and painter. During these decades, most of his extensive, largely neo-expressionist oeuvre was created, which includes large- scale sculptures , bronze sculptures , stone reliefs , glass paintings and mosaics as well as fresco-buono - wall paintings , classic oil paintings and tapestries - including many works in public spaces. Saalig's work has been presented at numerous international solo and group exhibitions.

In 1982, together with other artists from the Frankfurt scene, Saalig founded the artist group "Griesheim School", whose spokesman he acted until his death and in which context he ran a private art school.

Heinz Saalig received the YMCA Art Prize of the International Red Cross , the Diplôme d'Honneur of the Salon International Biarritz, the plaque of honor from the International Artists' Exchange and the Heusenstamm Foundation's study award .

On March 6, 2007, Heinz Saalig was the victim of a robbery not far from his studio, in which the perpetrator stole a single-digit amount of money. Presumably as a result of the attack, the artist died a few days later.

The Saalig studio in Frankfurt-Riederwald, which has largely been preserved in its original state, presents a small selection of the artist's works from various creative periods. The studio is open to the public by appointment.
