Heinz Thomas (lawyer)

Heinz Günther Thomas (born June 7, 1920 in Munich ; † August 3, 2002 there ) was a German lawyer .

The study of law began Thomas after graduating from the Wittelsbach Gymnasium in Munich in the winter semester 1942 at the University of Rostock with the career goal of Business Law . Only after his release from captivity in 1946 was he able to continue in Munich . In 1948 he passed the first state law examination. In 1949 he received his doctorate in law and obtained the qualification for judicial office by passing the second state examination in 1950. In 1951 he joined the judicial service of the Free State of Bavaria , where he was appointed presiding judge at the Munich Higher Regional Court in 1972 after serving at the Munich District Court and Munich I Regional Court . Thomas held this position until he retired in 1984.

According to the accounts of the legal scholar Benno Heussen , Thomas was a "master of comparison ", but he also "had a sure feeling for when the lawyers needed a fundamental decision".

In 1974 Thomas was appointed honorary professor at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . He is known to the legal public primarily as co-editor, together with Hans Putzo , of a commentary on the code of civil procedure and as the editor of Palandt from the 28th to the 62nd edition. In 2013, the "Thomas / Putzo" was still the top-selling German procedural law commentary.
