Heisteig is the name of a wooded mountain range between Wiedergeltingen and Weicht in the Bavarian districts of Ostallgäu and Unterallgäu . With Heisteig also exactly running over the ridge trail is called.

Surname

Occasionally one also finds the spelling Haistaig or Haisteig . On the topographic map of the Bavarian land survey from the middle of the 19th century, the spelling Heusteig can be found for the ridge north of Weicht . The Heusteig version is also used for local signposting for the state forest . In the current official maps, however, the spelling Heisteig is used. The name "Heisteig" is derived from the Middle High German term "heien" or "geheit" (also haien / gehait) in the sense of "cherish" and "cherished".

height

At the highest point of the Heisteig in the municipality of Wiedergeltingen there is a large barrow. Here is a height of about 649  m above sea level. Reached NHN . The Heisteig rises around 30–40 m above the surrounding area.

geology

The Heisteig is part of an approximately eleven kilometer long middle moraine along the Wertach , between the places Rieden in Ostallgäu and Amberg in Unterallgäu. In the area of the Heisteig, the central moraine consists of gravel from the Ice Age .

history

Hill grave overgrown with trees on the Heisteig, also the highest point in the community of Wiedergeltingen

The Heisteig is one of the most important sites of archaeological monuments in the vicinity. There are up to 200 barrows here . Furthermore, remains of Roman settlements were found on the east and west sides. To the south of Wiedergeltingen , on the east side of the range of hills, there are remnants of a Wölbacker corridor, which underline the early settlement of the area. The Heisteig as a path was an important north-south path connection at the time of the Alemannic settlement due to its location, which was raised from the marshy Wertachauen at that time and was therefore maintained accordingly. The Hermannstetten settlement, which has now disappeared, was located on the east side of the Heisteig until the late Middle Ages .

Up until 1804 there was apparently a twelve meter high stone statue with a lantern on the Heisteig on the southern outskirts of Wiedergeltingen. A small artificial hill with the name Lehenbühl (also: Lehbüchl ) is given as the location of this lighthouse . The structure described is said to go back to a Roman watchtower, but this reference is purely speculative, as no corresponding evidence has been provided so far. Rather, the description gives a reference to the cathedral chapter in Augsburg, which is said to have set up its own foundation for the maintenance of the lantern described. With the "iconoclasm" of secularization, however, the tower was destroyed and later replaced by the Wiedergeltingen war memorial , which commemorates those who died in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 .

On April 26, 1945, an Air Force aircraft of the Heinkel He 111 type coming from La Rochelle with five people on board crashed into the forest on the Heisteig. All occupants of the twin-engine bomber died. A memorial plaque made of oak on the Heisteig, about 500 m north of Weicht, commemorates the victims today.

Others

In the concept for updating the chapter 'wind energy' in the regional plan of the planning association Donau-Iller from 2011, individual areas on the Heisteig were also designated as priority area of category 2 (including conflict with the existing burial mounds) for wind turbines of significant spatial importance . Some investors have expressed interest in building one or more wind turbines. In the last partial update of the regional plan, however, no more wind turbines are planned on the Heisteig.
