The Chemnitz-Nord combined heat and power plant is a lignite-fired combined heat and power plant in the north of the city of Chemnitz with an installed electrical output of 230  MW .

history

The power plant was built from 1957 under the name " Heizkraftwerk Nord I ". The foundation stone was laid on April 30, 1959. The first power plant block went online on December 1, 1961. A total of three machine sets with an output of 25 MW each were installed. The power plant was used to supply the city of Chemnitz with energy and provided district heating for around 14,000 households. The " Heizkraftwerk Nord I " was taken out of service on April 4, 1997.

In the course of the city expansion, which was characterized from 1974 by the construction of the large residential area Fritz Heckert , a further increase in heat and energy demand became apparent. In order to cover this, the foundation stone of the " Heizkraftwerk Nord II " was laid on October 9, 1981 , and on December 5, 1986, it first supplied heat to the city's district heating network. By 1990 three units with an output of 160 MW each for heat dissipation and 60 megawatts of electrical output each were put into operation. In 1995 a flue gas desulphurization system was installed. In 2008/09, a 100 megawatt extraction condensation turbine was installed, which replaces one of the conventional back pressure turbines. A total of 3 blocks are available for generating electricity and heat. Units B and C are fired with indigenous raw lignite. Block A could be operated with either natural gas or light heating oil until 2016. In May 2016, this block had to be permanently decommissioned after an accident.

The grid connection is made via the Chemnitz-Glösa and Chemnitz-Mitte substations on the 110 kV high-voltage level to the network of the distribution network operator Netzgesellschaft mbH Chemnitz .

According to the Federal Environment Agency, CO 2 emissions in 2011 totaled 1.22 million tons.

The power plant is currently operated by Eins Energie in Sachsen GmbH & Co. KG and, according to the operator, should be shut down by 2028 at the latest. From 2022, 20 gas-fired decentralized combined heat and power plants are to gradually take over the district heating and electricity production of the power plant.Template: future / in 2 years

Numbers on the thermal power station

Around 2000 building units are supplied with district heating, which requires around 400 MW of power. The power plant was originally designed for 1 GW heating capacity, but after the fall of the Wall only 400 MW were required. The length of the lines for district heating in Chemnitz is 380 km; this makes the network one of the largest in Germany.

The thermal power station has a total district heating output of 475 MW, which is divided into three blocks. Block A, which is fired with gas or light heating oil, has 170 MW, Block B with pulverized coal combustion 165 MW and Block C with pulverized coal combustion 140 MW.

chimney

Also known locally as “ Esse ”, “Schorsch”, “Lulatsch” or “colored pencil”.

In the course of the construction of the Nord II thermal power station , the construction site was cleared in 1978 and, in 1979, the construction of the new power station chimney began using sliding formwork. This was completed in 1984. With a height of 301.80 meters, it shapes the cityscape and is also the tallest structure in Saxony .

As part of an art project by the French painter Daniel Buren , the chimney was given a brightly colored coat of seven color sections by October 8, 2013.

According to Eins Energie in Sachsen , the chimney is already the highest total work of art in the world. The concept originally also envisaged the attachment of a chain with 1200 LED lights, which should be wound around the structure in a helix . Only a few weeks after the lights had been installed, they had to be dismantled again in October 2014 due to technical problems and the ingress of moisture. In October 2017, work on installing the LED lighting was resumed and the lighting was put into operation on November 13, 2017.
