The Nord Heizkraftwerk , also known as the Mannheim waste-to-energy plant ( MHKW Mannheim ), is a thermal waste recycling plant on Friesenheim Island in the north of Mannheim . The operator is MVV Umwelt Asset GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of MVV Umwelt GmbH and thus MVV Energie AG . Three garbage boilers with flue gas cleaning systems are in operation. The power plant was put into operation in 1964, the flue gas cleaning system in 1986 and 1997. These have been retrofitted several times so far in order to always be able to comply with the strict requirements of the 17th BimschV . In 2009 the new boiler 6 was added. The old garbage cans 1-3 were demolished. Gas boilers 1–3 shut down. In the power plant, 700,000 tons of residual waste are burned every year, mainly household waste, but also waste from industrial plants, so-called commercial waste. This corresponds to a quantity of around 20,000 freight wagons. The power plant supplies 20 industrial customers in the north of Mannheim with process steam at various pressure levels and temperatures. At the end of 2019, the northern heating plant is to be connected to the MVV district heating network and around 25% of Mannheim's district heating will be generated CO 2 -free. BASF on the Mannheim side is also able to obtain process steam at 25 bar / 250 ° C.

In addition, the power plant has a three-line water treatment system in which well water is completely desalinated. The old garbage bunker has a net volume of 12,000 cubic meters and the new part on garbage boiler 6 has a net volume of 20,000 cubic meters. The garbage boilers were built in 1964 (2 pieces), 1997, 2003 and 2009. The power plant has two chimneys, 146 and 196 meters high.

The power plant feeds electricity into the power grid, which was generated through combined heat and power and corresponds to the needs of almost 70,000 three-person households. The grid connection takes place at the 20 kV medium voltage level and the 110 kV high voltage level in the power grid of the distribution network operator MVV Netze .
